About Fort Bragg, North Carolina:

The Home of the Airborne and Special Operations Forces, Fort Bragg hosts approximately 57,000 military personnel, 11,000 civilian employees, and 23,000 family members. It is one of the largest military complexes in the world. Fort Bragg Soldiers participate in combat and humanitarian operations across the globe, and it has deployed and supported more troops than any other post in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn.

Located in the central Piedmont region of North Carolina, the area was settled in the late 1700s by Highland Scots. Covered in tall pines and sandy soil, Piedmont’s low, rolling hills, access to water, and rail transport, and largely unoccupied, the land provided a perfect location for the training of troops during WWI, and Camp Bragg was founded. Pope Field was established by the War Department in 1919 to support aircraft and balloon detachments for mapping, mail carrying, and spotting forest fires. Pope Field is now one of the oldest airfields serving the Airborne. Field Artillery units trained at Camp Bragg, its location and size perfect for testing and training in the latest long-range artillery weapons. In 1922 the Camp was officially designated at Fort Bragg. As WWII approached, Fort Bragg became a reception and training ground. Its population exploded by as much as 67,000 in 1940. Fort Bragg underwent continued improvements in its infrastructure to accommodate the swelling ranks. By 1942, under the leadership of native North Carolinian Major General William C. Lee, the first tactical parachute battalion was created. Both the 101st Airborne Division and the 82nd Airborne Division were under Lee’s command. In 1952 the Psychological Warfare Center was established and is now known as the US Army Special Operations Command, headquarters for Special Forces Soldiers. Since the 1960s, Fort Bragg’s Airborne Division have been deployed to the Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Grenada, and Panama, and into the 20th century, they have been engaged in Southwest Asia, Saudi Arabia, along with humanitarian support for Hurricane Andrew, Haiti, Bosnia, and Albania/Kosovo.

Fort Bragg continues to expand while improving the quality of life for its Soldiers and families. Fort Bragg’s new headquarters include the US Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) and the US Army Reserve Command.
