GASTON J. GLOCK style LP, the purveyors of fine quality hunting and shooting sports apparel and accessories carry a unique line of handcrafted scrimshaw pendants from the German artist M. Mehmke. Intricately hand-incised on 8,000 to 12,000 year old Mammoth Ivory, each unique pendant features a detailed portrait of an animal such as a buck, wild boar, bison, raccoon or the majestic lion.
The art of scrimshaw, although created by Alaskan Eskimos and in the Orient, became popular as sailors during the American whaling days, created incised and decorated Sperm whale creations to ease the boredom of their long months at sea.
The GASTON J. GLOCK style LP line of scrimshaw pendants are created on ancient ivory; each with its own unique attributes and coloring from being in contact with a variety of minerals over the ages. The artist polishes the ivory to a high sheen before drawing the design on, incorporating the uniqueness of the ivory into the design. Then with very sharp scribes, begins the process of incising the ivory using a variety of techniques from thin lines to suggest hair to stippling to suggest shadow. Inks or colored paints are rubbed into the image bringing the various animals to life.
Each pendant come with an adjustable woven leather chain and several pendants have ivory beads to complement the scrimshaw pendant. No two are alike and each pendant displays the incredible talent of the artist creating these miniature animal portraits, often using a magnifying glass or microscope.
