Review: LaserLyte Side Mount Laser for LCP/Kel-Tec

I mentioned not too long ago on the Twitter Net that the good folks over at LaserLyte sent one of their newest lasers my way for testing. Their new Side Mount Laser (which is compatible with the Ruger LCP as well as the Kel-Tec P3AT/P32) was first announced on their Facebook page right before SHOT Show 2011. They then showed off the prototype at SHOT, and got such an amazing response that they put it into production right away… This laser is so new, in fact, that it just started shipping at the beginning of this month.

Now there are two really big things about this laser that I want to point out right off the bat. First, is the fact that this laser retails for under $100. No, that was not a typo… this is in fact the lowest price point that you are going to find for a laser to go on your pocket gun! The other really great aspect of this laser it that it weighs in at a microscopic 0.25 ounces (also, not a typo). Unbelievable! I actually did a double take when I put it on my scale and saw how much it weighed.

The first thing that you will probably notice when you look at this laser is that it is mounted to the gun like no other laser on the market. Those designers over at LaserLyte were really thinking outside of the box with this one. The end result is that you have a laser that is going to be compatible with just about any pocket holster on the market. Odds are, you are not going to have to go out and buy a new holster to carry your gun with this Side Mount Laser installed. Thats a big savings of both time and money. Its slim in the areas that it needs to be to be compatible with a wide variety of holsters, and it’s not going to print when you stick it in your pocket. They also developed a design in which activation is very intuitive. Much like the activation method seen with the new S&W Bodyguard .380, this laser puts the activation switch right in line with where the index finger naturally points when indexed along the side of the pistol. There is also a little ring shaped guard around the button which allows you to easily feel the button’s location. Unlike the Bodyguard, however, the activation button on the LaserLyte is no where near as difficult to activate – which was my biggest gripe with S&W’s attempt at a laser of this style.

Instillation of the unit is pretty straight forward and can be easily accomplished in about 5 minutes by anyone who is remotely handy. Basically you are going to push out two pins on the firearm and replace them with two included screws that will secure the laser to the side of the firearm. Here is Laserlyte’s instructional YouTube video that outlines the procedure.

The quality of this laser is exactly what I have come to expect from LaserLyte… Top notch! Once on the gun, I only had to make a small adjustment to get the laser lined up on the sights. I chose to sight it in at “across the room” distances since that is what I feel is realistic for most self defense scenarios. A day at the range proofed the Side Mount Laser to be a winner when it comes to performance. It flawlessly held its zero and never failed to activate/deactivate exactly as it should. The one thing that I really like about this laser is that it is programmable for either constant or strobe. The big thing is that it also remains programed so that you can set it up how you want it and then turn it off and it will remain set up that way until you decide to change it up. Nice!

So whats the bottom line?

LaserLyte’s new Side Mount Laser is a great addition to your pocket gun carry package. Weighing in at 0.25 oz its not gonna add any extra heft at all to your flyweight pocket rocket. Its also the least expensive way to get a laser onto your pocket gun and is a top quality piece backed by one of the biggest names in the industry. This is definitely a great laser aiming devise that couples a bright, focused beam with an intuitive activation method. So, if you are looking for a laser to put on your Ruger or Kel-Tec pocket pistol then head on over to LaserLyte’s website and check this thing out.
