Social Media Reload

Every week, millions of links, photos and videos are shared on social media from brands and individuals alike. The latest blog series from Laura Burgess Marketing, the Social Media Reload features the most popular, interesting, entertaining, and controversial content in the industry from the past week and repackages it into a quick list with fire power.

In a week that saw the announcement of new branding from Hilary Clinton and multiple professional sports franchises, including the Cleveland Browns, Milwaukee Bucks and Washington Wizards, the U.S. Military Academy’s efforts to position their athletics program for the future while maintaining the iconic identity and values of Army West Point did not go unnoticed. Replacing the outdated Black Knight logo, the new “Athena Shield” branding, featuring helmet, sword and star over a USMA Gold-colored shield, “signals a consistent foundation honoring the brand equity that has been built across centuries of service, competition and sacrifice.” View the new branding online or when all 28 athletic programs take the field, court and track this fall.

FROM SOFTWARE ENGINEER TO BULLET FLORIST

An avid shooter, artist and enthusiastic tinkerer, until recently, Anthony Zambai, was a software engineer in Colorado with a steady job and paycheck. That is, until a post on Reddit sparked a business idea that led him to form Bullet Bouquets, a company that creates tiny, lead flowers from expanded hollow-point bullets, in just three days. Today, Zambai spends his days shooting thousands of hollow-point rounds into polypropylene drums filled with water, attaching them to copper wires in the form of stems and bedding them in a flower pot of empty .22 casings. Bullet Bouquets currently range from three to 36 blooms and can be purchased online at bulletbouquets.com. (via Outdoor Hub)

In 2013, Congress passed a federal law criminalizing the misrepresentation of oneself as having earned decorations or combat medals in order to obtain money or “tangible benefits,” otherwise referred to as “stolen valor.” Two years later, the issue has sparked it’s own website and YouTube channel dedicated to outing those who unlawfully impersonate military members and veterans. And while the cause has picked up steam among the online military community, this week it received publicity from an unlikely source, Comedy Central’s Daniel Tosh, of Tosh.0. Known for his low-brow comedy and viral videos, Tosh tackled the issue of stolen valor in a way only he could, giving out his own fake service medal and donning a Revolutionary War getup.
