That is exactly what a YouTuber by the name of Stephen Floyd noted about his brand new Winchester Super X Pump (SXP) shotgun in a video earlier this week. In the short video, Floyd demonstrates the 12-gauge pump shotgun’s ability to fire when closing the action despite the safety being on. After garnering several hundred thousand views, the video reached Winchester, who immediately issued a safety warning and recall notice, stating “a limited number of SXP (3 ½” chamber) shotguns may, under certain circumstances, unintentionally discharge while closing the action. Failure to return any affected shotguns for inspection and/or repair may create a risk of harm, including serious personal injury or death.”
SMART GUNS ARE READY, BUT ARE WE?
It’s a legitimate question that has been asked since manufacturers, like Armatix in Germany, began developing the technology over a decade ago. Currently, most smart guns utilize one of three recognition methods, including RFID chips in accompanying watches or jewelry, biometric scanners and grip recognition. Regardless of the technology used, companies like Kodiak Arms and Armatix all have the same end goal in mind – safety. While the hope is smart guns will prevent gun-related accidents with children and prevent law enforcement and military deaths when firearms fall into the wrong hands, they are not without controversy. Many gun owners are hesitant about reliability and fear the technology will be used to increase gun control or become government-mandated. But, in the words of Armatix designer and executive Ernst Mauch, “if there are other technologies available, we should not close our eyes.” (via Fortune)

While there’s certainly no lack of wildlife in Florida, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service estimates only 100-180 of the endangered species remain in the wild, making this encounter of the elusive panther that much more exciting. With that said, I’m just glad the beautiful animal made its turn and the crew wasn’t put in a situation that would further hurt the limited population. (via Outdoor Hub)
