Thoughts on the Debt Ceiling Crisis

In New Bern, North Carolina, the pace of life is slower than what we were used to up north in New England. In fact, there is only one newspaper here in town. Yes, I, Ms. Social Media, read the newspaper. How could I not, especially when the Sun Journal has the liveliest “Letters to the Editor” I have ever read. The recent debt ceiling crisis filled the editorial pages with all sorts of letters condemning the President and the Democrats. Some blasted the Republicans, while others blasted the whole darn government. Writers blamed everything from processed foods, illegal immigrants, the Internet, apathy, socialism, you name it. I look forward to the Sunday paper when the letters get a whole 2 page spread in the paper. My neighbors are indeed a lively bunch, mostly retired, good deal have served their country (I’m near Cherry Point), and almost all are frankly tired of politics, or perhaps the politicos. And I couldn’t agree more. Those “elected officials” in DC have taken themselves too seriously for too long and no longer represent true Americans. While this crisis demonstrated again how our “DC Dandies” are more worried about their appearance or electability and could give two hoots about you and I. But now that the new bill has passed both houses and the President has signed it, I guess the heat in the editorial pages may cool down as well as in most of our country. So now, we can get back to what is really important to Americans and in New Bern its about your electric bill, a local POA, the crime in Greenville, or the new bar downtown all found and shared in a small local newspaper.
