Social Media Reload

Gone are the days of newspapers, magazines and network television. Social media is today’s top source for news, entertainment and information. But with the quick pace of trending topics and 140-character updates, unless you live online, you’re bound to miss something. Luckily for you, that’s my job. The Social Media Reload features the most popular, interesting, entertaining and controversial content in the firearms and outdoors industry from the past week and repackages it into a quick list with a bang. Read on and see what you missed this week.

I’m not sure what the obsession is with food and guns, but I’ve come to learn the Internet is a weird place. Known for his absurd food torture tests, YouTuber MattV2099 enlists the help of the VSO Gun Channel for a special treat re-do: the AR-15 Twinkie Challenge. After a non-judgmental taste test to ensure the Hostess treats are legit (because someone has to do it), Twinkies are inserted into the firearm and magazine in an attempt to choke it with 135 calories of “creamy, cakey, golden goodness.” As you can probably imagine, the test gets a little sticky, but the snack cakes ultimately prove no match for America’s Rifle and Wolf Ammunition.

BETTER THAN PICKING FLOWERS
Kids say the darndest things. In one of the latest viral videos, a little girl by the name of Gracie is seen shooting her very own .22 rifle. But it isn’t the act of shooting that makes this short 14-second video so cute, it’s her genuine reaction—saying, “It’s better than picking flowers.” Since being posted on Facebook by Gracie’s mother, Martha, the video has been shared more than 41,000 times and praised for putting on display how to safely teach children to shoot. Gracie, who also plays the violin, may still be young, but already knows the incredible feeling of pulling a trigger for the first time. Ducks Unlimited WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS
They say “a picture is worth a thousand words,” and the old adage certainly holds true when looking at the winning photographs of the Ducks Unlimited Member Photo Contest announced in the May/June issue of the DU Magazine. Hundreds of entries were submitted by members from across the country for the various categories, including waterfowl, waterfowl hunting and retriever, but only eight were named winners or runner-ups. And for the first time, all winners were first-time participants in the contest. There’s just something special about a perfectly timed photograph. View the winners here and don’t forget to check out all of the honorable mentions.
