Despite the lionfish being native to the Indo-Pacific, the “feral pigs of ocean reefs” have found their way to the United States and Atlantic waters over the course of the past two decades. An invasive species, lionfish eat native fish and can have a quick negative impact on a reef habitat. To reduce the population of the predatory fish, environmental organizations and both commercial and recreational divers alike have come together to ramp up harvesting efforts along the southern United States. Traditionally hunted with spears and hand-held nets, one group has made a bang by bringing their pistols, complete with custom suppressors, underwater for some good ol’ Glock-fishing. Making music with guns is nothing new, in fact, we covered it in a previous Social Media Reload, but there’s just something about using gun power and brass to make melodies that we love. In this video, Russian IPSC shooter Vitaly Kryuchin joins The Shooting Star Band for a true GLOCK-enspiel musical, performing classic hits like “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” on metal targets at the range. Like a life-size glockenspiel, the different plates are designed to produce specific notes, enabling songs to be played. Why wasn’t this an instrument offered in middle school band class?
