The National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) is pleased to announce the winter edition of The Tactical Edge is now available. Widely considered the leading authority in tactical operations information, The Tactical Edge reaches thousands of law enforcement officers with each issue.

In this issue, NTOA announces the NTOA Academy, created in partnership with the International Academy of Public Safety (IAPS). The article discusses how the Academy will take the professionalization of SWAT to the next level. Our feature articles begin with Ed Allen’s “Integrating Software and Mobile Apps in Critical Incident Command.” In this article, Allen discusses how law enforcement is adapting to smartphone apps and the best way to incorporate them into incident command and improve situational awareness processes.

Other members-only features include Bruce Liebe’s article “Active Shooters: Identifying Potential At-Risk Venues and Response Options” and “Police Use of Force: Explaining Foundational Concepts” by Sgt. Fred Farris of the Lenexa (KS) Police Department. The entire issue is available to new members online by joining NTOA.

The NTOA has also made several articles available online to nonmembers, including “Probability Model for Mitigating Civil Unrest and Enhancing Effective Police Response” by Mark Lomax. The article explores the factors that contribute to a civil unrest situation and outlines the benefits of a probability model. Phil Hansen, in “Expectations for Professional Conduct,” discusses how personnel must be regularly monitored and expectations with respect to professional conduct set so that any unprofessional behavior can be diagnosed early and corrected immediately.

Other items of interest are the Director’s Message by Mark Lomax, a multiagency white paper on “Building Community Resilience to Dynamic Mass Casualty Incidents” and an article summarizing the 2015 CNT Conference by Jan Dubina.
